Splitting group expenses honestly is easy; settling them efficiently is not — naive splitting produces far more repayments between people than actually necessary.
The Approach
How it was engineered
Modeled group debts as a graph and applied simplification to collapse chains of repayment into the minimum number of transactions, synced in real time across React and Firebase.
The Outcome
Where it landed
Debt simplification cut the number of transactions per group by 60%, the app has processed over $500k in tracked expenses, and calculations resolve in under 100ms.
